Gili Under Water Paradise.
Travelers come to the Gilis for the sun, the sea and the laid back
charm of these three small islands off the northwest coast of
lombok. White sand beaches, clears blue water and lots of great
little bars. Restaurants and places to stay are all part of the
appeal. But pay far the greatest numbers of visitor from around
the world are attracted by the Gilis refutation as on the best
dive location on the south east Asia.
With around 25% of the worlds reefs located in Indonesia and with
over 3,500 marine species living in Indonesia waters we have one
of the richest diversities of marine life in the indo pacific
region in comparison the great barrier reef has just 1,500 species
and red sea only 600.

LOMBOK DIVE SITE POINT

Lombok’s drop-offs, plateaus and slopes reflect a good cross
section of what Indonesia has to offer. You can dive in and be
fascinated bi stunning gardens of stony and soft corals, white
trip reef sharks, moray Eels, Angelfish, Pipefish, mantas and
sting rays. Several different species of turtles and much more.
Reefs and dive sites abound in Lombok, with many more being
discovered all the time by diving pioneers, there are excellent
dive sites being explored in the south and east of Lombok. But the
most popular at the moment are the sites closed to the Gilis, Gili
Air, Meno and Trawangan. There are at least 14 different dive
sport to choose from and the level of diving skill ranges from
beginners to advanced divers.
There are many professional dive centers on the island and if you
haven’t dived before, this is the prefect place to learn! Much of
the technical information in this article has been supplied by
Lombok’s two largest dive operator.
Shark Point east Gili Trawangan is a popular dive sport in
the mornings, the site consists of different levels ( 24m, 20m,
18m ) ands star with slope of hard and soft corals, shark Point is
home to green and hawksbill turtles and schools of trevally.
Napoleon fish, white and black- tip reef shark and blue spotted
stingrays in the sandy areas… ending up with Ribbon Eels, leaf
fish and even mantas on occasion.
Coral Fan Garden & Basket Coral Garden are two dive spots
in the north of Gili trawangan popular for the mornings dives. The
first few meters you have the filling of being in aquarium –
schools of colored fairy basslets , Fusiliers, banner fish and
deeper, around the big coral and stone blokes, are Groupers,
Batfish, Trumpet fish. Hiding Octopus and Bearded Scorpion fish.
Look out to the blue. Sometimes eagle rays, mantas and reef sharks
can be seen.
Manta Point in the rainy season, when the water is rich
with plankton, this dive site in the south of Gili Trawangan gives
you the best chance to see mantas ray. But event without mantas,
you still have a good chance to see reef shark and turtle.
Meno Wall in the west of Gili meno goes down to 18m and
offers a lot of small coral fish such and Lionfish, Soldier fish
and Gobies, with crabs, wart slugs and nudi branches coming out of
the hiding. Angelfish, Butterfly fish. Spotted rock cod and clown
fish also live here. Meno wall is also called “ turtle heaven “
because of the many resident Hawksbill and green turtles. Soft
coral cover the whole reef and there are also stony varieties such
as cabbage, Brain and antler corals. It’s an amazing dive at
night, with lots of Spanish dancers and lionfish.
Simon’s Reef is a superb coral site, with a great variety
of stony corals and may soft corals, located to the north of Gili
Meno. Staghorn and table corals. Star and brain corals, gorgonion
fans and anemones are just a few of the many corals represented
here, all are in excellent condition. Fish life in biased toward
larges reef species and schooling species. Snapper and sweet lips
are prolific in big schools, as well as large parrotfish,
angelfish, and triggerfish. The site is also well populated by
turtle and often impressively large Barracuda.
Air Wall in the west of Gili Air is a very beautiful wall
that due to the soft coral cover. Shines yellow- orange, depending
on the position of the sun. there are lots of overhangs and arches
along the wall, filled with Glassfish. Moray Eels and sometimes
Octopus. The highlight of this wall is a coral clock at 22m in
which Leaf fish ( Scorpion Fish ) make their ‘ home ‘ surrounded
by shrimp. Pipefish and thousands of Glassfish. Look out into the
deeper parts for white tip reef sharks.
Frogfish Point to the east of Gili Air is famous for small
things and rarities. A huge coral from 5-18m welcomes you. There
are a lot of sandy areas, where the Garden Eels let off steam, and
corals are overgrown with anemones and their Clown fish. Have a
manicure there by one of the many Cleaner Shrimps.
The Japanese Wreck is situates in a protected bay off the
south of Gili Air. This Japanese WWII Patrol Boat is intact and is
around 20m in length, covered in beautiful soft corals. Inhabiting
the wreck are may lionfish, stonefish and frogfish. Around the
wreck, schools of tuna, batfish, and barracuda are commonly seen.
This sites is for using enriched air divers and Blue marlin Dive
recommend using enriched air ( nitrox ) to get the full experience
at this depth.
